Mending D rift

 

Day 1 of Velocity Motorshow.

It has been a long time since I have regularly attended events.
Not sure why. Probably a combination of work life and changing landscape of events in Malaysia.

Whichever the case is, I just acquired a second hand camera to replace the outdated and out of focus EOS 40D. I love the camera but there isn't much choice there... even Canon doesn't support the camera any more. Can't even get it fixed.

It is a big adjustment getting used to the newer camera. What better way than at a car event.
It has really been a while since I've attended one of these. In the weeks leading up to this Malaysia Day weekend event, there seemed to be a lot more chatter on my facebook and maybe I just so happen to notice it. Didn't seem anything out of the ordinary, but then the advertisement for drift event caught my attention.

If it wasn't for the fact that Formula Drift was happening again,

(that and I was broke) 

I would probably still have been in Thailand.

Car events are about.. well the cars...

but for many, especially the so-called photographers,

it's all about the ladies...

and so for those wannabe's and the wannabe wannabe's...

here's a few for you to feast your eyes on...

For Moolah Drifts

Thanks to Myeg, I got grandstand tickets to the Formula Drift for the second year in a row...

and this time was cutting it close... 2 days b4 the event.. :)

This year it was held at Dataran Merdeka

Unfortunately there isn't many good vantage points for ticket holders unless you have a media pass...

but then again it seems like almost any tom, dick or sally qualifies for media

The cars were cars on display, 

big cars

with big names

as well as small

Also as expected was the young umbrella girls

though most hot blooded guys came to see this kind

the drivers also seemed a little younger this year

actually there's a 19 year old driver who kind smashed his car on his first trial.. 

such a shame (no this ain't him)

anyhow, soon it was time

the crowd was ready

and the drivers got the green flag

and off they raced down the track

skidding, and sliding

as they start their approach

at high speeds

then keeping it close as they make their way around the corners

and all that without having to worry about avoiding the popo's

but the cones.

sometimes they succeed

but sometimes they don't

However, better the cones than the barricade

too bad I had to miss the final race day...

at least I got a few shots of the trial runs

All in all, It was a fun outing for the adults

and the kids

not only did the kids get to paint their faces

but some adults also put on masks!

anyway that's it about the drifting...

Malacca Set Adrift

Now that you've had your fill of the ladies,

we can get to the actual focus of the FXOpen...

the cars doing their things

The cars go at break neck speeds

seemingly slipping and slidding

but having to always be in control

and keeping up with your opponent

Then night falls and the best 32 come out to play

starting off with a bang

raise the flags,

drivers nervously getting into their cars

turning on the lights

 and drifting on to the next stage

with some flare

no holding back

especially around the corners

taking it all head on

leaving the opponents in the dust

and stay in the lead

but sometimes things go wrong...

leaving some things behind

while taking some things away with it

This being the first time shooting a night drift
was surprised how well my camera performed,
even at ISO1600...
All in all it was definitely a worth it experience...
